Gold poised for rebound as AI bubble shows cracks

The long-standing rally in artificial intelligence stocks is masking a fragile foundation, according to market strategist Fred Hickey. As skepticism grows regarding the actual productivity gains of AI, capital flows may soon pivot away from overvalued technology shares and back toward the relative safety of precious metals.

Gold poised for rebound as AI bubble shows cracks

Fred Hickey, founder of The High-Tech Strategist, warns that the AI sector has reached an extreme valuation level, with major tech companies now comprising nearly half of the S&P 500's market capitalization. He characterizes the current environment as a massive bubble built on accounting maneuvers and circular financing rather than sustainable end-user demand. With open-source models from China pressuring industry pricing and return on investment failing to materialize, Hickey argues that the disconnect between financial markets and the real economy is widening.

While the AI frenzy has historically acted as a headwind for bullion, the recent correction in gold prices appears to be bottoming out. Speculative excess has been largely purged from the market, evidenced by stable physical buying from Asia and a cessation of major ETF outflows. Hickey maintains that the structural drivers of the gold bull market—central bank purchases, persistent U.S. fiscal deficits, and global de-dollarization—remain firmly intact. As investor disillusionment with technology grows, he expects a rotation into hard assets, signaling that the next leg of the precious metals rally may be imminent.
