Market warning signals flare as debt hits record and AI rally stalls

Margin debt climbed to a record $1.5 trillion in June, leaving investors with a $1 trillion shortfall in broker cash balances. This liquidity gap, coupled with sputtering AI-sector momentum and persistent inflation, has pushed several critical market indicators toward levels not seen since the 2007 financial crisis.

Market warning signals flare as debt hits record and AI rally stalls

The cooling enthusiasm for AI stocks reflects growing skepticism regarding profitability and the looming threat of a semiconductor glut. As bond yields for major tech hyperscalers outpace Treasury returns, the cost of hedging credit risk has spiked. While Nasdaq futures show a 17-year low in bullish positioning, which could provide room for capital inflows, the underlying market structure remains precarious due to heavy reliance on borrowed money.

U.S. 30-year Treasury yields hovering above 5% continue to strain corporate credit, with Raymond James Chief Investment Officer Larry Adam noting that spreads on the riskiest bonds have reached a 15-month high. This environment forces a more discerning approach to lending, specifically targeting weaker borrowers who are increasingly vulnerable to the Fed's policy stance.

Global energy costs remain a significant drag despite a slight retreat from the $100-per-barrel mark. Importers in the Euro zone and the UK face costs nearly 30% higher than last year, while tanker rates for routes from the Middle East to Asia have surged 600% due to regional maritime instability.

Currency markets add another layer of volatility, with the yen trading near 164 per dollar. This historic weakness has turned the yen into a primary vehicle for carry trades, leaving global markets exposed to a rapid unwinding should Japanese authorities intervene to support the currency. The combination of high borrowing costs, expensive energy, and potential shifts in Japanese monetary policy creates a volatile backdrop for global equity investors.
