Zcash Schedules Ironwood Upgrade to Resolve Orchard Supply Uncertainties

Following the discovery of a critical vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool, Zcash will trigger its NU6.3 Ironwood upgrade on July 28 at block height 3,428,143. The network shift forces a transition to a new shielded pool, introducing a turnstile mechanism designed to verify the total circulating supply of ZEC.

Zcash Schedules Ironwood Upgrade to Resolve Orchard Supply Uncertainties

The Ironwood upgrade addresses lingering concerns regarding potential hidden inflation within the Orchard pool. While developers patched the original flaw in June, the protocol's privacy-centric design prevented a definitive audit of whether the vulnerability was exploited. By implementing a turnstile between the legacy Orchard pool and the new Ironwood system, the network will prevent more ZEC from exiting Orchard than entered it. Any value exceeding that threshold will be effectively trapped, ensuring that circulating supply remains transparent without exposing individual transaction details.

Node operators must transition to Zebra 6.0.0, as the upgrade marks the official end of support for the legacy zcashd software. Beyond supply verification, Ironwood introduces quantum-recoverable notes. This change binds additional data into note construction, creating a path for future recovery protocols to verify ownership should quantum computing threats emerge. However, this does not grant current transactions immediate quantum security; users must actively migrate funds into Ironwood-compatible notes to utilize the new protection. The Zcash Foundation warns that failure to update node software before the fork will result in a loss of consensus with the main chain.
