KB Kookmin Bank Shifts Trade Settlements to J.P. Morgan’s Blockchain

KB Kookmin Bank is set to become the first South Korean institution to integrate J.P. Morgan’s Kinexys network for corporate trade settlements. Launching next month, the service will facilitate U.S. dollar cross-border transfers across 10 countries, marking a pivot toward programmable payments for the bank’s institutional clients.

The rollout will be managed through the bank’s domestic headquarters and its Singapore branch. Initial operations focus on a corridor spanning the United States, South Korea, Singapore, India, Thailand, and five Middle Eastern and African nations: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and South Africa. By adopting Kinexys, the bank aims to replace traditional, slower settlement systems with a blockchain-based infrastructure capable of near-real-time processing.

This move aligns with the bank’s broader transition from experimental pilots to production-grade deployment. Earlier this year, KB Kookmin Bank executed a $100 million digital bond issuance on its proprietary Orion platform, effectively cutting settlement times from five business days to three. Alongside these institutional efforts, the financial group is developing a hybrid stablecoin credit card system in collaboration with Avalanche, designed to link digital wallets directly to consumer payment networks. These initiatives reflect a wider trend among South Korean lenders, who are increasingly integrating distributed ledger technology into state-regulated projects, including forthcoming tokenized deposit programs for public-sector spending.
