The flash Composite Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) climbed to 53.6 in July, up from 51.9 in June, marking an eight-month high for the economic barometer. This surge was primarily fueled by a strong performance in the services sector, which reached 53.6, significantly outpacing economist forecasts that predicted stagnation. While the manufacturing sector saw a marginal dip to 53.8 from 53.9, business confidence regarding the year-ahead outlook hit an eight-month peak.
Chris Williamson, Chief Business Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted that the survey data aligns with an annualized GDP growth rate of 2.0%, a notable improvement over the 1.2% pace recorded in the second quarter. The data also highlighted a renewed interest in hiring, with employment numbers rising for the first time in three months. Despite these positive indicators, spot gold showed little reaction, trading at $4,058.10, a modest gain of 0.23% for the day.
