Pakistan Goods Transporters Threaten Strike Over Daily Fuel Pricing

Pakistan’s freight industry is bracing for a potential nationwide shutdown, with the Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance warning that daily fuel price hikes have pushed many businesses to the brink of collapse. The threat follows the government's recent decision to link domestic fuel costs directly to volatile international market fluctuations.

Pakistan Goods Transporters Threaten Strike Over Daily Fuel Pricing

The alliance has publicly denounced the shift to daily price adjustments, labeling the federal government’s mechanism as an anti-transport policy that ignores the economic realities of the road freight sector. Malik Shehzad Awan, president of the organization, stated that operators should remain prepared for a strike call at any moment as diesel costs continue to surge.

While the government maintains that the new pricing structure provides transparency by reflecting real-time international oil market action, the industry is seeking an immediate dialogue to mitigate the impact. The friction coincides with broader instability in the energy sector, as Pakistan’s refiners scramble to diversify crude oil imports. Following briefings on threats to supply routes in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, local refiners have begun actively pursuing alternative supply chains from the U.S., Nigeria, Singapore, and Central Asia to hedge against further disruptions.
