Shanghai Regulators Summon Automakers to Tighten Online Marketing Rules

Fifteen major automakers, including Tesla and BYD, faced a stern compliance briefing in Shanghai this week. City authorities convened the industry leaders alongside digital platforms to enforce stricter standards on pricing transparency and curtail what officials describe as improper marketing practices across the Chinese automotive sector.

The gathering brought together a significant cross-section of the industry, from established giants like SAIC Motor to emerging electric vehicle players such as Xiaomi, Xpeng, Nio, and Li Auto. More than 80 dealer groups also attended the session, which was orchestrated by a coalition of municipal bodies, including the cyberspace, commerce, and market regulation departments.

Regulators focused heavily on pricing compliance, demanding that manufacturers and retailers justify their sales strategies. Beyond the showroom floor, the city administration issued a mandate for companies to conduct internal audits of their online footprints. Internet platforms, notably Bilibili and Xiaohongshu, received instructions to escalate content moderation and improve their response times to corporate infringement complaints. This push represents a broader effort to sanitize the digital information environment surrounding the auto industry, with officials promising a sustained campaign of oversight.
