Tether Gold secures regulatory status in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Global Market has officially designated Tether Gold as an Accepted Spot Commodity, granting regulated financial firms the authority to offer services involving the tokenized asset. This regulatory milestone arrives as the total value locked in the XAUT token has surged by 246% over the past year to $2.86 billion.

The designation allows companies within the international financial center to integrate XAUT into their product offerings, provided they obtain the necessary permits. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino noted that the move establishes a clearer path for firms looking to support the asset. This recognition mirrors the ADGM’s previous decision to accept Tether’s dollar-pegged USDT as a fiat-referenced token, effectively cementing the issuer's footprint in the Middle East.

While the ADGM framework provides a path for adoption, it does not grant automatic authorization for every entity in the center. The growth of XAUT, now a dominant force in the $4.46 billion tokenized commodity market, is further supported by utility expansions. For instance, the lending platform Ledn plans to incorporate XAUT as collateral, potentially shifting the asset from a store-of-value instrument to a core component of crypto-backed credit products.

Beyond gold, Tether continues to diversify its financial interests. The company recently participated in a $7 million funding round for Pact Labs to bolster payroll infrastructure and contributed $20 million to the Argentine digital bank Ualá. These moves occur against a backdrop of regulatory scrutiny in the United States, where Tether faces ongoing questions regarding its compliance with the GENIUS Act. As the firm navigates these international frameworks, its ability to maintain its market position will depend on its capacity to satisfy evolving regulatory mandates in both the U.S. and global financial hubs.
