Brent Crude Spikes to $90 as Middle East Tensions Choke Hormuz Transit

Brent Crude briefly touched $90 per barrel during Monday’s Asian trading session, driven by a fresh surge of hostilities between the United States and Iran. The rally followed nine consecutive nights of U.S. strikes against Iranian military targets and retaliatory missile attacks on American assets across Jordan, Kuwait, and Syria.

Brent Crude Spikes to $90 as Middle East Tensions Choke Hormuz Transit

The market volatility reflects a hardening standoff in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping artery that has seen traffic grind to a halt. The U.S. Central Command stated that its recent strikes aim to degrade Iranian capabilities used to menace commercial vessels. Conversely, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed they successfully targeted U.S. aircraft at Jordan’s Aqaba airport and military installations in Kuwait and Syria, while reporting two oil tankers immobilized near the Omani coast.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the military posture, asserting that Washington will continue to respond until Tehran ceases interference with international shipping lanes. Despite the rhetoric, the price surge proved fleeting. By the time U.S. markets prepared to open, Brent had retreated to $88.64 and WTI to $82.67. This pattern mirrors recent weeks, where weekend escalations trigger early-week panic, only to dissipate as the reality of supply availability recalibrates during U.S. trading hours.
