Andrew Cuomo joins OKX board to steer U.S. institutional push

Former New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has joined the board of directors at cryptocurrency exchange OKX, formalizing a relationship that began with his advisory work in 2023. The appointment underscores the company’s strategic effort to bridge traditional financial infrastructure with the digital asset ecosystem.

Cuomo, who served as New York’s 56th governor and U.S. secretary of housing and urban development, will leverage his regulatory background to guide the exchange’s expansion. Beyond his board seat, he continues to serve as co-chair of a joint venture between OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. This initiative aims to link institutional market data with blockchain-based products, including potential access to futures and tokenized equity markets.

OKX founder and CEO Star Xu noted that Cuomo’s involvement has already influenced the company’s approach to the U.S. market. The exchange, which currently holds a $25 billion valuation following an investment by ICE, is aggressively building out its compliance infrastructure. This includes a regional headquarters in San Jose and a relaunched U.S. platform that followed a 2025 settlement with the Department of Justice.

The board appointment arrives as the firm diversifies its product suite, moving beyond standard trading into AI-driven marketplaces and tokenized asset services. By integrating Cuomo’s public-sector experience, OKX intends to navigate the complex regulatory landscape while deepening ties with established financial players across its licensed territories in the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East.
