Cardano Shifts to Protocol Version 11 via Van Rossem Hard Fork

The Cardano mainnet has officially transitioned to Protocol Version 11 following the successful activation of the van Rossem hard fork on July 18. This deployment serves as a significant technical milestone, marking the first time the network has ratified a major upgrade entirely through its new onchain governance framework.

The upgrade, which arrived after rigorous testing on the Preview and Preprod networks, introduces refined Plutus cost models designed to lower the operational expenses of smart contracts. By streamlining these performance metrics, the network aims to enhance efficiency while laying the necessary groundwork for future scaling efforts. Intersect confirmed the transition proceeded smoothly, backed by a governance vote that saw support from 77.63% of delegated representatives and 52.7% of stake pool operators.

Beyond immediate cost optimizations, van Rossem functions as a bridge toward the upcoming Dijkstra era. This future stage will introduce Ouroboros Leios, a consensus mechanism overhaul intended to significantly boost transaction throughput without compromising the existing security architecture. While development teams continue to stabilize the Leios testnet and refine block certification rates, the network’s reliance on the Voltaire governance system signals a permanent shift toward community-led decision-making. This decentralized approach has already influenced treasury allocations and protocol prioritization, distancing the network from its previous reliance on centralized developer-led coordination.
