Robinhood pivots to long-term finance as Tenev defends market speculation

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev is positioning his brokerage as a pillar of the American financial system, even as critics label the platform’s high-frequency trading culture as gambling. The company is now pivoting toward long-term wealth management, anchored by a new government partnership to manage investment accounts for children.

Robinhood pivots to long-term finance as Tenev defends market speculation

The Trump Accounts program, which provides a $1,000 government contribution for children born between 2025 and 2028, marks a significant shift for Robinhood. By developing the app to manage these tax-deferred investments, the company aims to move beyond its reputation as a hub for meme-stock volatility. Tenev argues that the distinction between speculation and gambling is essential, noting that market liquidity relies on participants betting on future price movements. This narrative shift comes as the firm aggressively diversifies into prediction markets, blockchain infrastructure, and IPO underwriting.

Tenev is anchoring this transition with his own capital, keeping over 90% of his net worth in Robinhood shares. While he offloaded 375,000 shares in July 2025, he retains more than 48.2 million Class B shares. Analysts expect the company’s revenue from prediction markets to climb significantly, reaching an estimated $586 million by 2026. By integrating government-backed savings with tokenized assets on the Robinhood Chain, the platform is attempting to shed its pandemic-era image in favor of becoming a comprehensive global financial utility.
