SEC Quadruples Options Limit for BlackRock Bitcoin ETF

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has authorized a fourfold increase in the position limit for options linked to BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust. The cap, which rises from 250,000 to 1 million contracts, reflects the regulator’s acknowledgment of surging institutional demand for derivatives tied to the spot Bitcoin fund.

NYSE Arca pushed for the rule change, arguing that the previous threshold failed to keep pace with actual trading volumes. By expanding the ceiling to 1 million contracts, the exchange aims to provide market makers with greater flexibility to hedge positions and manage inventory without the artificial friction of restrictive caps. The decision aligns IBIT’s options framework with rules already established on platforms like Nasdaq ISE and PHLX.

While the SEC allowed the update to take effect immediately, the agency continues to solicit public feedback on the proposal. For institutional investors, the move removes a significant barrier to large-scale strategies, signaling a shift toward more robust liquidity for crypto-linked derivatives. This regulatory victory coincides with a period of strong performance for BlackRock, which recently reported a 31% year-over-year revenue growth for the second quarter of 2026.
