Hong Kong Clearing Alerts Public to Sophisticated Phishing Scheme

Hong Kong Interbank Clearing Limited has identified a network of fraudulent websites masquerading as official payment service providers to harvest sensitive financial data. By dangling fake cash rewards and promising verification support, scammers are tricking users into surrendering ID documents, bank account details, and private contact information.

Hong Kong Clearing Alerts Public to Sophisticated Phishing Scheme

The sophisticated operation mimics the Faster Payment System (FPS) to lure victims into performing real-name verification. Once users provide their Hong Kong ID numbers, phone numbers, and banking details, the attackers guide them through illicit transactions via virtual wallets. These sites further claim to offer refund assistance and unauthorized transaction reporting to keep victims engaged with fake customer service agents.

HKICL clarified that it maintains no connection to these platforms and does not provide direct services to individual members of the public. The company emphasizes that its only legitimate domains are hkicl.com.hk and fps.hkicl.com.hk. Anyone who has interacted with these fraudulent portals should contact the Hong Kong police immediately.

This warning arrives as local regulators intensify their crackdown on digital asset security. The Securities and Futures Commission recently mandated that licensed trading platforms abandon SMS-based authentication in favor of phishing-resistant methods, such as hardware security keys and device binding, to better protect investor assets from similar exploitation.
